Initially contracted in 2004 to provide broadband connectivity to 133 schools in Bedfordshire at speeds of 10Mbps (secondary schools) and 2Mbps (primary schools), Updata now supports 277 schools across the two unitary authorities of Bedfordshire Borough and Central Bedfordshire.
Data rates have increased to 100Mbps (secondary schools) and 10Mbps (primary schools), with a county-wide fibre network and local distribution from 33 telephone exchanges using a mix of fibre, ADSL and EFM.
The network supports streaming video, voice, video conferencing and virtual learning environments, with Updata providing a central firewall and connection to the Internet.
