Design & Build

Updata doesn’t provide standard solutions, our approach to designing carrier-class networks combines detailed technical understanding with flexibility of approach. Where appropriate, we’ll design from scratch. Typically though, our clients have existing infrastructure or supplier relationships, which we will build on and integrate with.

The building blocks of Updata’s design approach are:

  • Access Areas:  Updata pioneered local-loop unbundling (LLU) for local government clients in the UK. Our unrivalled understanding of LLU means we can provide innovative, scalable and reliable end site connection in a very cost-effective way.
  • Backhaul:  Updata uses high capacity 21CN fibre for backhaul as well as its own end-to-end dark fibre.  We also deploy wireless backhaul to complement traditional wireline technologies, offering additional resilient back-up capacity for network backbones or as a substitute when wireline costs are prohibitive.
  • Core Switching Infrastructure:  Updata has extensive experience implementing MPLS (multi-protocol label switching) networks. MPLS allows us to ‘virtualise’ networks, allowing multiple public sector stakeholders to operate separate segmented networks using common infrastructure.
  • Access Circuits:  Updata is experienced with providing end site access through copper, fibre and wireless. Our LLU expertise means we can offer cost-effective, high-performance copper connections for the last mile using ADSL or SDSL.

Management and Service Level Agreements (SLA)

Updata networks are underpinned by a carefully considered management approach, set out in a clear service-level agreement (SLA).  We pro-actively manage and report on performance against the SLA to improve customer satisfaction and promote transparency.  Service credits are provided in the unlikely event that an SLA is in breach.

The building blocks of Updata’s service approach are:

  • ITIL-compliant service desk: Updata is ISO2000 (IT Service Management Systems) accredited and adopts ITIL-compliant service desk procedures.
  • 24/7 support availability: Updata provides support from a UK-based network operations centre (NOC), permanently staffed by qualified engineers.
  • Pro-active monitoring: the Updata NOC uses sophisticated SNMP technology to monitor individual circuits for speed, signal strength and transmission rate, allowing our engineers to detect and remedy problems before they threaten service quality.
  • Direct client access: Updata clients have access to a dedicated self-service Web portal through which they can monitor or interrogate the network, generate performance reports, and log/track service requests.
