The five-year deal will result in additional bandwidth and improved network speeds to council buildings across 340 square miles. Benefits include improved internet access for rural areas, libraries and community facilities, allowing provision of enhanced services for job seekers and people seeking online training. The contract will deliver increased bandwidth resulting in better services for local communities.
The contract will reduce the council's annual telecommunications bill by over 20%, saving around £120,000 each year while also offering data sharing opportunities with other government agencies.
Capita IT Services will be working in North Ayrshire alongside its wide area network (WAN) specialist partner, Updata Infrastructure, with whom they have had a strategic alliance in Scotland since October 2011.
North Ayrshire Council Leader, Willie Gibson, said: “This agreement supports our commitment to reduce operational costs and provide better network services and ICT facilities to both corporate and education establishments as well as our employees. It will make a real difference in terms of connecting people and services in the mainland and the island communities. It aligns with our existing commitment to enable delivery of next generation broadband services to North Ayrshire residents and businesses.”
Peter Hands, managing director, Capita IT Services, said: “The new network will be the foundation of delivering the council’s transformation programme, which aims to provide enhanced services to the local community quickly and cost effectively. We look forward to supporting the delivery of numerous benefits to the social and economic livelihoods of North Ayrshire’s communities.”
Vic Baldorino, Sales Director, Updata, added: “We are really pleased to be working with Capita once again in Scotland and are delighted to learn that our joint approach has delivered a winning solution to North Ayrshire. Our solution provides the ideal technical platform across which North Ayrshire Council can deliver a wide range of innovative next generation services to benefit its stakeholder communities. We are delighted to be involved and very much look forward to getting started on this exciting project.”
